Food Services Manager

Full-time; typically four 10-hour shifts per week.

The Food Services Manager is responsible for efficiently operating The Lighthouse’s kitchen, and overseeing all aspects of food preparation including: ordering & purchasing, preparing and serving food, developing cleaning schedules, overseeing staff & volunteers, managing food donations, and building relationships with clients, staff, volunteers, and donors. This individual ensures safe food handling practices and cleanliness standards are adhered to. Strong personal integrity, leadership abilities, the ability to effectively deal with stress, and ability to connect with a varied population are crucial.

Job Duties

  • Plan menu for meals served three times a day, seven days a week
  • Order and maintain grocery inventory; ensure that ‘first in, first out’ policy is followed
  • Develop relationships with suppliers and volunteers
  • Prepare and serve food to clients staying in The Lighthouse’s shelters and supported living
  • Build relationships with clients and tenants helping with kitchen duties
  • Develop regular cleaning schedules for all areas of kitchen (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Assist with cleaning dishes and kitchen area
  • Research prices of suppliers and determine most cost efficient options for ordering or purchasing
  • Ensure all saved lunches and suppers are made each day
  • Account for meal tickets
  • Manage all food costs
  • Work with volunteers; be organized and ready to have them help
  • Manage and use all food donations; build relationships with donors


  • Food Safe certificate – strong knowledge and understanding of food safety standards
  • Experience preparing, cooking and serving food for approximately 100 people
  • Experience ordering and purchasing

Work Conditions

  • This position requires 10-hour shifts, to serve three meals/day to clients and residents
  • Stands and prepares/serves food for up to 10 hours a day with minimal sitting time
