Stabilization Shelter Support Worker

Reports To

Full-time night shift for 40 hours per week. Shifts run from 12 Midnight to 8:30 AM.

Summary

Together with a co-worker, the Stabilization Shelter Support Worker provides emergency shelter services to manageably intoxicated individuals. Staff will support service users in addressing their health, housing, addiction issues and any issues which perpetuate or increase the risk of homelessness. Staff must be able to think critically in a timely manner, work as a team, resolve conflict and show compassion and empathy towards clients. Knowledge and understanding of poverty, homelessness, oppression, addiction and mental illness is required.

  • Reduced Brief Detox usage for shelter purposes

  • Decreased number of Police interactions
  • Reduced number of stays in Lighthouse Stabilization Unit and will be housed more appropriately

Job Duties

  • Conduct nightly client intakes:
    • Obtain and record demographic and other required information from shelter users
    • Assess client’s level of intoxication, risk factors and appropriateness of service
    • Redirect clients to more appropriate service where necessary
  • Build supportive relationship with shelter users
  • Support and facilitate stabilization of clients during their stay
  • Provide and promote a safe environment for clients and staff
  • Some case management duties may be required, working in conjunction with other Lighthouse staff
  • Monitor clients through verbal exchange and/or behavioural observations at 30-minute intervals
  • Maintain peace and quiet in shelter
  • Conduct routine rounds – check bathrooms
  • Alert co-workers and coordinate response whenever needing to approach a client to manage behaviours or if needing to de-escalate a situation.
  • Make prompt emergency services calls in cases of imminent medical, suicidal or violence risk
  • Perform prescribed set-up and take-down procedures including food provision, stripping beds, preparing bedding for laundry and re-making beds as needed
  • Perform clean-up duties using prescribed sanitation procedures and cleaning supplies
  • Facilitate client shower and laundry sign-ups
  • Communicate with case managers regarding client care
  • Document and file client information and entering of data onto information system
  • Complete shift report, entries in Information Log and prepare any necessary Incident Reports
  • Document “bars” into barred list
  • Assist with service planning and evaluation processes.
  • Obtain and maintain necessary certifications: ASIST, PART/WAVE, First Aid/CPR, Mental Health First Aid, etc.
  • Maintain professional registration in chosen field of practice, if applicable
  • Participate in ongoing staff development and training
  • Become familiar with and be compliant with Lighthouse Policies and Procedures
  • Present self in an approachable, friendly manner as an ethical example of a professional community organization
  • Assist other Lighthouse staff and program areas as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Diploma level of training in Human Services (Addictions, Nursing, Social Work, EMT, EMR, Psychology) along with professional registration where required, or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Demonstrated compassion and empathy towards clients.
  • Knowledge/understanding of poverty, homelessness, oppression, addiction and mental illness.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to staff and client privacy.
  • Demonstrated an ability to work in a collegial, team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Proven assessment skills.
  • Proven critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflict
  • Computer literacy, including effective working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, E-mail and Information System applications.

Work Conditions

  • Shift work required.
  • Work with individuals who are intoxicated, may be volatile and may destabilize in their functioning
  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
  • Interacts with residents, staff, partners, as well as government/community agencies and personnel
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Physical activity including walking, standing, sitting
