Casual – Janitorial & Kitchen Departments

Position Type:

This is a casual position for shifts in both the janitorial and kitchen department.


Reports To

  • Maintenance Supervisor & Building Manager for Janitorial Duties
  • Kitchen Manager for Kitchen Duties


The casual staff member for janitorial and kitchen department will be responsible for filling in gaps as needed in both departments.

Janitorial Job Duties

  • Locks or unlocks doors, turns lights on/off
  • Performs general clean-up of all office facilities
  • Sweeps, mops, polishes, refinishes resilient floor areas, dumps garbage and recycling bins, performs all cleaning aspects of halls, offices, board rooms, restrooms, lunchroom and classrooms as well as washing walls, windows, and window coverings
  • Cleans light fixtures and changes bulbs/tubes as required
  • Contacts appropriate maintenance service personnel for major repairs
  • Responsible for vandalism clean-up and repair within skill level
  • Maintains and/or has working knowledge of environmental safeguards and alarm systems
  • Helps set up rooms for meetings, parties, or various other activities and cleans up afterwards
  • Plan and prioritize work for self
  • Determine needed supplies and equipment
  • Monitor need for equipment maintenance and repair
  • Responsible for proper inventory of materials and supplies. Accountable to administrators for custodial performance
  • Other duties as assigned

Kitchen Job Duties

  • Assists with the preparation and service of three meals per shift (breakfast, lunch, supper) to clients staying in The Lighthouse’s shelters and supported living.
  • Perform regular cleaning duties for all areas of kitchen as scheduled by Kitchen Manager on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis


  • Any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described
  • Understanding of cleaning/kitchen duties
  • Willingness to obtain additional training as needed
  • Fluent in English (verbal and written)
  • Food Safe Certificate
  • WHMIS training would be an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check required as condition of employment

Work Condition

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Overtime as required
  • Work both indoors and outdoors
  • Kitchen shifts are 10 hours in length; Janitorial shifts are 8 hours in length
  • Combination of weekday and weekend shifts
