Emergency Shelters

The Lighthouse provides emergency shelter for single men and women in two separate dorms. These emergency shelters are for people who either have nowhere to call home or their living situation is such that it is safer for them to be in a shelter. The causes range from people who have just had a bad series of events set them back financially, domestic violence to a series of concurrent disorders. They are given a safe place to sleep, a place to store belongings and supports to help them find employment (if needed) and long term housing that is safe and sustainable.

Our emergency shelter beds are closed during the day from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. A locked storage room is available for client belongings. Clients can access their belongings during storage times five times per day at: 8:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 4:30 PM, 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

The Dube Lighthouse (Supported Living)

The Lighthouse’s first tower was known for many years as the Capri Hotel (and before that the historic Empire Hotel). It features 64 rooms that house a variety of residents who need varying levels of support to allow them to function in the community. It’s a diverse community and ranges from transitioning youth to low-income seniors. Some have physical and cognitive disabilities and are overcoming addictions. What they all have in common is that they find a sense of community, safety, and a place to call home at The Lighthouse.

Supported living communities are designed for residents that can live independently, but require some assistance. As opposed to a traditional care or group home, supported living communities provide a higher degree of independence for their residents, while helping to manage basic daily living activities such as preparing meals, taking care of medications, and obtaining basic needs that is driven by our Housing Plus philosophy.

Housing Plus

As The Lighthouse has grown and changed, it’s gotten harder to describe what we do but when you boil it all down, we are there to help people with their housing.

Housing Plus is a proven and cost-effective way to prevent and address homelessness. Unlike shelters and other services, Housing Plus combines affordable housing with on-site counselling, training and other services that help people live stable and successful lives.

Housing Plus provides services and housing for people who face social isolation and other complex challenges – individuals and families who may have very low incomes and serious, persistent issues that may include mental illness, HIV/AIDS or substance use. It reduces reliance on costly emergency, health and social services and, more importantly, helps people to be strong and successful members of the community.

The Lighthouse is not just a housing provider or a landlord, we offer support for people who can and want to live independently but require some assistance. For those in our emergency shelter, we provide basic meals and shelter, for those in our supported living suites, The Lighthouse provides a higher degree of independence for our residents, while providing basic daily living activities such as preparing meals, taking care of medications, and obtaining basic needs.

For those in our affordable housing suites, we are there for them as well, even if the need isn’t as great. The Lighthouse has real-world experience in providing supportive housing for those recovering from homelessness and has applied this experience in developing its Housing Plus process. Experience in cities like Portland, Oregon clearly demonstrates that creating a community (as opposed to “building an institution”) is key to recovery from any number of challenges – including homelessness.
